Edison2 – Progressive Insurance Automotive X PRIZE

Boasting a the lowest drag coefficient of any car tested in the GM wind tunnel or at the Chrysler Proving Grounds, this innovative Very Light Car demonstrated over 100 MPGe on the test track under stringent testing conditions using a highly innovative 250cc turbocharged fuel injected single-cylinder engine fueled by E85. It requires only 8 pounds of force to push this vehicle. More like an airplane than a car, the Edison2 uses highly innovative light-weight, low mass hub-mounted suspension for its aerodynamically flared four wheels contributing to its sports car-like handling and braking. Its low total mass of 830 pounds is a tribute of engineering strength and packaging utility. Team name: Edison2 Location: Virginia Car name: Very Light Car Class: Mainstream No. of wheels: Four Passengers: Four Drive type: Internal combustion engine (E85), rear-wheel-drive Power source: Yamaha 250cc, 27-50 hp. I’m so disappointed.
While I appreciate what these guys are doing there is absolutely zero chance that this tin foil car will ever be put into production, which I was led to believe was the express purpose of the Xprize, to spur makers to produce sellable efficient cars.
They have no plans to mass produce this car.
Aptera on the other hand does, but they went home without a penny.

I noticed that the pit crew places a reflective sheet over the cabin between runs. Obviously this means that there’s no climate control in the car. it is far from a production-ready vehicle if such basics are absent. The additional amenities that would be necessarily added to the car to directly compete with other production vehicles would potentially severely impact its efficiency, possibly canceling out much of its potential. The winners are probably not indicative of future viable cars.

i don’t like that it runs on conventional fuel, but the car and the people involved init are great.
OghamTheBold: SUV are dangerous. they must pay for and build their own roads. and pay heavily on insurance too.

can we invest in the company??

Efficiency = lighter = less safe in collision with SUV’s and trucks
So for safety – for efficiency – these cars just need their own lanes

my march 1989 scientific american has the GM sunraycer on the cover and the article states on page 92 the sunraycer prototype had the lowest drag coefficient for a land vehicle every measured in the GM wind tunnel- 0.125. so i think the VLC is in very good company!
