Honda Civic GX Natural Gas Vehicle Review – Kelley Blue Book

FOR MORE CAR VIDEOS & REVIEWS VISIT: www.kbb.com Honda Civic. We recently spent a week in a 2008 Honda Civic GX, the only natural gas vehicle (NGV) available to consumers today, and it didn’t take long to appreciate the range and availability of regular ol’ gasoline. The Civic GX is rated for combined fuel economy of 28 miles per GGE (Gasoline Gallon Equivalent, an NGV standard), but the tank holds just eight GGE. Leaving room for error, then, you have to refill the GX about every 180 to 200 miles. That wouldn’t be as big a problem if compressed natural gas (CNG) were available on every other street corner. The thrust of it, we learned in a typical week of cruising, commuting and grocery shopping, is that you have to plan ahead. The 113-horsepower GX is also slower than traditional Civics, and the extra-large fuel tank eats up all but six cubic feet of trunk space. Still, you can count us in as fans. Our nearby CNG stations are on the pricey side, but we still saved about 30 percent on fuel versus a regular Civic. Factor in solo access to the HOV lane, tax incentives and cleaner emissions, and it’s clear why the 2008Civic GX sold out in the first few months of the year. @dcnhvhb if that’s ALL the bad stuff, there isn’t much to it…..but really, the big down fall is, smaller ciy/states don’t have natural gas pumps available…at least what I have noticed

Chevy had them for 15 years available in the Cavalier as a 1,500 dollar option. I have one. Trouble is no NG anywhere in most states. Why? Oil companies. They make is sound like Honda thought of it. NG is extremely plentiful in the US. Simply put the ripoff artists artists screw the middle class. And the Middle Class Fully Deserves it. Damn Idiots from hell. Can’t tell them crap.

NG has better octane rating than gas, always a plus

i guess the gist of the video is that this car is a pos. I mean who wants a car that can barely get to 65. a trunk that someone made a good by ” a dead body wont fit in there” so i guess no more murdering your friends when you have this car.

@SladkaPritomnost i am not sure about GX but about 90% people in pakistan now use compressed natural gas (CNG) on gasoline engines. CNG kit is mounted on a gasoline engine, it has a gas cylinder in the boot. It’s cheaper and it’s cleaner. The only drawback is about 10% less power and you also have to change the engine oil around 4000 to 5000 KM depending on engine oil. Synthetic oil will perhaps last for 10,000 KM. It’s a good alternate fuel.

N ty..i’ll still go with the hybrid one if i’m trying to be green…
at least i don’t have to struggle with that trunk space and the annoyance of finding a place to fill it up…

I think world has 10x more natural gas than oil! And not all of it it’s in Islam countries (like 66% world’s oil in middle east).
World need more natural gas engines, why car companies didn’t bet on natural gas earlier? Japs should know they have no natural resources.

Is the car, I mean natural gas engine build-in originally in Honda?
Because I’m not really convicted in rework companies (that convert gasoline to natural gas engines I think this rework could damage engine).

@EternallyRecurring Toyota has a hybrid CNG prototype Camry they are testing. They offered a CNG Camry in the late 1990′s but did not offer after the 1999 model year.

@murdelabop The Civic GX is manufactured at the plant in Indiana I believe. Al are made in America. I know of no LPG powered Civics. There may be an aftermarket conversion available, but I have never seen a Propane conversion of a Civic. There are propane conversions of other models and I have seen Propane Crown Vics and GM offered an OEM Cavalier LPG conversion.

@rizrz34 It holds the _equivalent_ of 8 gallons of gasoline. CNG isn’t a liquid, like gasoline, but a gas, which has to be stored in compressed form. It takes up a LOT more room for the same mass of fuel. The trunk is so small because it’s full of fuel tank.

  22. murdelabop :

    Jan 6, 2011 5:27 am |

@spacestevie2 Check your facts. Almost all US market Civics are made in the US.

That said, you are correct, there are a lot of retired fleet vehicles around that are CNG powered, and a lot more that are LPG powered.

@ale03000 The trunk is so small because it’s full of fuel tanks. That’s the problem with CNG. It isn’t very dense as fuel goes, so fuel tanks have to be huge.

and this is not the cleanness running ever cause make a cleaner running car it runs on hydrogen which Emmit water vapor whats cleaner than that and im sure he was speeding doing 65

  25. ale03000 :

    Jan 6, 2011 7:13 am |

Everything else is good but why is the trunk so dam small??? I think the Civic Hybird is still better with more than 300 liters of trunk space if I’m not mistaken…
